Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are an important catalyst for urban transformation processes. Founded within the local business community, they invite local residents and business owners to champion improvements in liveability, accessibility, streetscape and the promotion of the neighbourhood by means of events and campaigns.

Although urban development involves physical changes to buildings and infrastructure, it is important to keep in mind that a vibrant community life is the most important factor to make a neighbourhood successful. Sustainable growth will occur if all residents, businesses and charities equally contribute to and benefit from the district while respecting each other’s needs.

The We Are Cities Campaign gives us an excellent opportunity to discuss the role of BIDs in general and the future of the Main St Dartmouth BID in particular. We look forward to explore how BIDs can contribute to democratic bottom-up governance and make our Canadian cities a better place.
